Gerontology

Interdisciplinary Minor in Gerontology

A minor in gerontology is available for LAS majors in psychology and sociology. The minor is offered through the Departments of Community Health, Kinesiology, Leisure Studies, Psychology, and Sociology; the Department of Human and Community Development; and the School of Social Work. Psychology and sociology students interested in the minor should consult with their major department's undergraduate studies director.

Hours Requirements
6 Courses outside the student’s own department
3-7 Select one group of courses:
 
MCB 334–Functional Human Anatomy, and
 
MCB 103–Intro to Human Physiology1
  or
 
MCB 103–Intro to Human Physiology, and
 
KIN 459– Physical Activity & Aging2
3 PSYC 314–Introduction to Aging, or equivalent
6 Two courses in gerontology taken from:
 
HDFS 404–Gerontology
 
KIN 459– Physical Activity & Aging
 
SOCW 415– Social Services for the Aged
18 Total hours

The total may be achieved through electives in gerontology selected from the list above or through up to 3 hours of internship or independent study credit.

1. 4 hours may be credited to the minor.

2. 7 hours credited to the minor.
