Discussion based course, enrollment limited. Meets FOUR hours/week, concurrently with French 552. Readings include: primary works of "classic" French film theory and criticism contemporary to films screened in the course, secondary works pertaining to film in context of French cultural history. Movements/issues to include: narrative/non-narrative impulses in early cinema, 20s avant-gardes, impressionism, surrealism, city films, documentary, "poetic realism", the Popular Front, women (directors and representations of), emigration, colonialism.
