Topic: Cultures of the Japanese Empire will introduce students to a crucial dimension of modern Japanese culture often ignored in literature courses--Japan's imperial past. Students will read important literary works by Japanese writers and by their colonized subjects as well as theoretical and historical texts. This colloquium will introduce students to important works of literature and to post-colonial studies in an East Asian context. No prior coursework in Japanese language or literature is assumed.
