Discovery course.
Art, Community, and Global Civil Society, 3 hours. This course is a think tank/creative lab for an exploration of the interface of art, culture, technology, and contemporary ideas about citizenship. The course culminates in student collaboratively designed webzines, blogs, or digital video documentaries on topics of student's choosing, and that convey student's insights about community life an increasingly globalized world. Prerequisites for enrollment in this course include: an inquisitive mind, a sense of adventure, and a burning desire to make a difference in the world. Facilities Charge 50.00 dollars First year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshman. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.

Topic: Museums in Action: Engaging the Community. Engaged Museums takes place in the UIUC Krannert Art Museum (KAM), and looks at how the KAM engages the interests of culturally diverse local communities. Students will learn about the museum?s curatorial practices and multicultural exhibitions; and they will work on teams to create new experiences for KAM Visitors. Students may also creatively explore how new technologies can be incorporated into museum educational practices. This course is open to all students. Prerequisites include love of art, love of people, and love to talk. Engaged Museums meets in the Giertz Education Center in the basement of KAM.

Topic: Understanding Visual Culture. Interdisciplinary methods in recognizing and understanding meaning of a wide range of visual messages in the arts, design, and culture, with emphasis on critical thinking and analysis. Topics include: visual perception, visual persuasion, the visual interpretation of time and space, humor. Contemporary art and design are explored through the use of semiotics and historical, cultural and ethical aesthetic and technical perspectives. This section for Chancellor's Scholars only; other students may only enroll with consent of instructor and the Campus Honors Program.
