Expanded course description: SLAV 505, OLD CHURCH SLAVONIC. For advanced students involved with any of the Slavic family of languages, including the literature of that language, Old Church Slavonic (OCS) is one of the most helpful courses they can take, and adds greatly to the understanding of the modern Slavic languages they work with. OCS is as basic as is study of Latin for advanced students of any of the Romanic family of languages (Italian, French, Spanish, etc.). Our plan is to use a $20 textbook-grammar-reader that is in print, so that each student will be able to have his/her own copy for the entire course and to keep for reference thereafter. We will study the writing system (Cyrillic alphabet, with mention of glagolitic), sound system, basic grammar categories, vocabulary formation, basic idioms and phrases, selected readings in OCS texts (all contained in same textbook). Prerequisite: reasonable knowledge of one (or more) modern Slavic languages (e.g., Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, etc.). Grade (with + and -) based on 2 hour exams and final exam. Address questions to <S-HILL4@UIUC.EDU>
