| 3 hours Discovery course. Architectural Response to Natural Disasters, 3 hours. This course introduces freshmen to the general principles of architecture, engineering, and urban planning, etc., that have defined the planning, design, and construction of the built environment with respect to natural disasters. Recent natural disasters such as the Northridge earthquake in the USA and Kobe earthquake in Japan as well as the floods and hurricanes in the USA and elsewhere have devastated many cities and habitats, making rebuilding them a major task. Through the study of built environments as they are planned and designed in disaster-prone regions, students will learn that the realization of the built environment warrants collaboration between architects, engineers, planners and other professionals and is a synthesis of art and modern technology. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only on Discovery course. |

This course introduces non-architecture students to the forces that have defined the design, construction, and image of skyscrapers and their urban environments. The skyscraper is the quintessential building of the modern age, and through its comprehensive use of structure, materials, and building systems, encompasses all aspects of architecture. Tall buildings give shape to the cities in which they are built, and the cities give shape to the buildings. Through the study of this significant modern building type students will learn that their realization is the collaboration between the architect and the engineer and a synthesis of art and technology of the modern era. First Year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. |
