Discovery course.
Issues in Sociology, Child Health in Southern Africa, 3 hours. In this course we will explore the current literature that examines the demography of maternal and child health in Southern Africa from a sociological perspective. We will explore a framework in the course that considers the ways that nation, race, class, gender, sexuality, globalization and other dimensions of oppression intersect to impact upon the experiences and agency of individuals and groups with health care and social support in the various Southern African Countries. Additionally, students will get hands-on experience analyzing data sets from the Demographic and Health Surveys for these countries. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
