Discovery Course
Race in Chicago. In the heart of the Midwest, the city of Chicago is notoriously divided by race evident in housing, education, and economic income. Called the "second city," the boon of ethnic diversity is paralleled by the pitfalls of racial segregation. Using interdisciplinary resources drawn from the social sciences and the humanities, we will study the development of Chicago as a racialized urban space through the prominent issues of migration, transnationalism, housing, segregation, education, and community organizing. First year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.
