Discovery course.
Art, Community, and Global Civil Society is a think tank/creative lab for examination of the interface of art, culture, technology, and citizenship. Class meets for three hours weekly and consists of instructor and student presentations; discussions with scholars, activists, and artists from a variety of disciplines across the UIUC campus; visits to local sites; readings, writings, and in-class inquiries; student research and creative work, and critiques. Art, Community, and Global Civil Society culminates in student collaboratively designed multi-media projects including but not limited to traditional artworks, performances, computer images, web sites, or digital video documentaries on topics of students? choosing, and that convey students? insights about community life an increasingly globalized world. No prior art or technology experience is required, and generous assistance is provided to new technology users. Prerequisites for this course include: an open mind, ability to tap into your own creativity, and a passion to make a difference in the world. Facilities Charge 75.00 dollars First year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshman. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.

Topic: Washi Art: The art of Japanese Paper. The instructor, Kyoko Ibe, is a world-renowned, Japanese washi (Japanese hand made paper) artist. In this studio class, students will study the history of washi, the concept of yugen, as well as explore various techniques of making washi. Students will learn contemporary washi methods as well as creating and preparing their own installation of washi art. Yugen is a word used to describe the profound, remote, and mysterious - those things which cannot easily be grasped or expressed in words, yet revealing spiritual strength and grace that impart transcendental power and beauty. Class meets in Noble Hall, room 22.

Topic: Expressive Painting. Using a variety of materials the students will create imagery in drawing and painting techniques. Painting techniques will include watercolor, Wet into Wet and the English method. Acrylic painting methods will include direct painting and washes. Energy and Individual expression will be expected.
