Seminar in Social Geography

Credit:  4 hours.


Advanced study of a current research topic in social geography. Topic varies from term to term; prepares students for dissertation and thesis research through study of advanced literature and the completion of a research paper. Prerequisite: GEOG 470 and GEOG 471, or equivalent; graduate coursework in social geography or in one of the social sciences.

Seminar meets in Room 319 Davenport Hall MAKING THE CONTEMPORARY CITY: This seminar explores the rise of the contemporary western city as a complex, multi-faceted landscape. We will interrogate and apply theory, particularly elements of structural and post-structural thought, to understand the rise of this city as a socially, physically, and symbolically restructured place.
