| 3 hours Introduces students to a wide range of outstanding German-language literature from the late eighteenth century to the present. We will read poems, plays, short stories, and novellas written by major German, Austrian, and Swiss writers that engage with issues such as reason and madness, love and sexuality, technology and modernization, justice and guilt, community and identity. Our focus will be on the exploration of literary texts in their historical and cultural contexts. To better understand these contexts, we will at times draw on paintings, photography, philosophy, social and political history, and film. The course will be conducted in German and thus also offers an excellent chance to practice and improve reading, speaking, and writing skills |
